About the Department
Department of Zoology is a dynamic academic department dedicated to the comprehensive study of animals and their diverse biological processes, exploring the intricacies of animal anatomy, physiology, behaviour, evolution, and ecology. We are committed to advancing scientific understanding of the animal kingdom through rigorous research, innovative teaching methodologies, and a strong emphasis on conservation biology. Our goal is to foster a deep appreciation for the rich biodiversity on Earth and to contribute to the broader fields of biology and environmental science. Established in 1975, the Department of Zoology offers undergraduate programme in Zoology. The course aims to impart basic knowledge in the observation and study of nature, biological methods, experimental skills and scientific investigation, theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of medical microbiology, research aptitude among learners and to unravel the potentialities of students with diversified characteristics. The Department also offers a Certificate Course in Histopathology that equip participants with the knowledge and skills required for histopathological analysis, including the identification of cellular and tissue abnormalities to open career paths in medical fields related to pathology. The Department also strives to inculcate research aptitude among students through projects and research papers and social bonding through community service. It has a well-equipped library, spacious lab with LCD projection system, classrooms and a museum with a repository of invertebrate and vertebrate specimens. The Department is always abuzz with a plethora of activities from seminars/workshops to enable the students to interact with scientists/researchers to annual visits to renowned institutions, laboratories and wildlife sanctuaries. Field study through field-based projects and surveys provides them with practical knowledge as well as sensitise the students to the value of existing biodiversity and the need for wildlife conservation.
VISION
The Department of Zoology aspires to be a global leader in zoological research and education, dedicated to unravelling the mysteries of the animal kingdom. The vision of the Department is to foster a deep understanding of animal life, behaviour, and conservation, contributing to scientific advancements and addressing the challenges of biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
MISSION
Our mission is to conduct cutting-edge research in Zoology, exploring diverse facets of animal biology, behaviour, and ecology.
● To equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to make meaningful contributions in zoological sciences for animal welfare, conservation, protection of biodiversity, and for the betterment of society.
● To promote conservation and ethical treatment of animals, collaborating with communities and institutions to address pressing issues related to biodiversity loss and the well-being of our planet.
● To provide a comprehensive education in Zoology, fostering scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and ethical awareness.
