Description:
Ocimum africanum is a hybrid between Basil (Ocimum basilicum) and American basil
(Ocimum americanum). It is a bushy aromatic herbaceous plant grown primarily in East
Africa and India. It has a fragrant lemon scent, and is used in cooking.
Leaves: The leaves are ovate to elliptical, with slightly serrated edges
Stems: The stems are quadrangular grows up to 80cm tall
Flowers: The flowers are small, white to pale purple, and arranged in whorls on spikes that
emerge from the leaf axils.
USES

1. Culinary Uses: In Indonesia and Thailand it is widely used in curries, soups and
salads. The seeds resemble chia seeds, after soaking in water it is used in sweet
desserts. Its aromatic leaves can be used fresh or dried.
2. Medicinal Uses: Traditionally it has broad medicinal actions including support for
stress, anxiety, heart disease, arthritis, dementia as well as being antiviral,
antimicrobial effects, and also used as a digestive aid.
3. Cultural Significance: In some cultures, it is used in rituals or as a protective herb
against negative energies.
4. Essential Oil Production: The leaves contain essential oils that are extracted for use
in perfumes and aromatherapy. Its oils may also help to fight bacteria if you have
respiratory, urinary, abdominal, or skin infections.
